Restaurant resume example and sample

There are many types of jobs available at restaurants – bus boys, hostesses, waiters and waitresses, cooks, bartenders, and managers – so your resume should reflect the position you want.  Be sure to demonstrate that you have all of the skills you’ll need for your position.  Hostesses and bus boys should have great customer service skills, as should waiters and waitresses.  Managers should be able to oversee employees, handle payroll, and mediate customer disputes.  Cooks and bartenders should understand food preparation and service.  Whatever position you are applying for, the following general skills will definitely help you:

Experience with customer service.  Odds are that you’ll have to interact with restaurant patrons, no matter what position you hold.  So, having experience with this skill is important.  Restaurant workers should be friendly, know how to talk to customers, and be able to handle disputes over food or service.  If you have worked at other jobs that involved customer interaction, like retail jobs, then this will help you land the job.

Knowledge of how a restaurant works.  If you’ve worked in a restaurant before, you’ll know how tables are numbered, how orders are processed, and how checks are paid.  Any work experience with these responsibilities will help you get a restaurant job, especially if that experience was from another restaurant.

Food knowledge.  If you work at a restaurant, you need to know about food. Patrons will want to know ingredients of some dishes, or want advice choosing the right wine or beer to go with their meal.  If you know about the food and drinks offered at the restaurant, you can help them with these decisions.  That’s why food knowledge will help you get ahead of the competition.

A good memory, or a knack for details.  Since you’ll be taking orders (or processing them, if you’re a cook or bartender), you need to be able to remember details.  Every customer wants his or her order just right, so this is an important skill.
