There are many positions available in a nursing career. Whether you’re starting out as a nurse’s assistant, working as a registered nurse, or pursuing a promotion to head nurse, you need to be aware of the skills and experience you’re required to have. When thinking about your nursing resume, consider all those skills that would help you in the position. The following are important:
Medical Knowledge. All nurses need some basic medical knowledge. If you know anatomy, you can help with medical procedures. Be sure to mention your education, including B.S.N and Master’s degrees. This is evidence of your knowledge. If you are a nurse’s assistant, you may not have a college degree, but you should have taken a program to be certified. Include this information on your resume, too.
Good bedside manners. Nurses are always interacting with people, so they need to know how to talk to patients. If you have any experience in customer service, working in teams, or actually working with patients (in a nursing home or other volunteer environment, for example), these are useful things to mention. Also, if you have experience working as a nurse, this will help prove your capabilities in this area.
Knowledge of equipment. All nurses and nurse’s assistants work with some kind of equipment. You need to know how to take blood pressures, measure heart rates, and take temperatures. The more advance you get, the more equipment you’ll need to use. So, if you have evidence of working with this equipment, don’t forget to list it.
Practice with medical procedures. If you worked as a nurse before, try mentioning different procedures you can perform. These can be listed in your job experience, when you write down your previous responsibilities.
