Publishing is a hard industry to break into and work in. However, it has been evolving lately. With the invention of e-Readers, e-Books, and other publishing alternatives, this industry is sure to change. Now is a great time to jump in. Whether you want to be an editor, warehouse worker, or agent, there are options. If you’re applying for these types of positions, make sure to mention the following on your resume to prove you can handle the job:

Your writing skills. Publishing is a world that revolves around writing, so knowledge of proper verb tenses, punctuation rules, and editing marks will help. If you have certifications in any area, degrees in English or Writing, or other credentials that could help prove this skill, it will help. Of course, having a polished and well-written resume will help support that evidence and show that you are a great writer.

Your business experience. While writing is about entertainment, it’s also a business. If you have any experience with business management or other office procedures, be sure to include them on your resume.

Your interest in books or magazines. If you’re going to work in publishing, you must love to read something. While this shouldn’t be the bulk of your resume, if you have a certain area of focus, like romance novels or graphic novels, it might be wise to include this somehow on the resume.

There are several examples of publishing career resumes online. Review them when writing your own resume:

Forensics is a widespread field made popular by television shows like Law and Order, CSI, NCSI, Bones, and Numb3rs. Some workers in these jobs do analyze crime evidence to help catch criminals; they indentify unknown substances and match DNA samples to determine who is innocent and who is guilty. However, forensics isn’t limited to what you see on network shows. Forensic anthropologists and archaeologists perform tasks much different than that, as do digital forensics specialists. So, when you’re writing your resume, make sure you tailor it for your specific forensics discipline. Be sure to mention the following in order to get the job:

Your education. Be sure to put down your specific discipline. A degree in computer forensics is much different than one in forensic anthropology. Your education will let an employer know what you are capable of doing and what you’ve been trained it.

What procedures your know. Every forensics position involves some sort of scientific procedure. This may be DNA processing, fossil cleaning, or computer tracing. Whatever the procedure, make sure to list it and give details. Seeing that you have skills will tell an employer you don’t need as much training as other clients.

Your previous internship or work experience. Though jobs in some forensic fields are rare, there are chances to win internships prior to graduating from school. These experiences will help a recent graduate stand out from a crowd of applicants, so make sure you give important details about any positions you held in school. If you’ve been out of school and working for a few years, mention that work, too.

There are several examples of forensic career resumes online. Review them when writing your own resume:

Social workers have jobs in a variety of different places, but they all perform one similar task: interacting with people. Social workers can be events coordinators, youth care specialists, Red Cross workers, or youth development workers. They are all generally good around both children and adults and can communicate well. Competition is high for these positions, so make sure you mention all of your relevant skills on your resume when applying for jobs. Relevant skills can include any or all of the following:

Previous work experience. If you’ve done volunteer work, had an internship, or held a full-time job in the field in the past, this is an important thing to list. Make sure to give precise details about your responsibilities at those previous positions.

Evidence of group work and interacting with clients. Since social workers are always around people, they need to be able handle group encounters and interact with clients. If events are to go smoothly in social work, these skills are key.

Your Education. Like most other professions, education is extremely important in social work. List your degrees, especially if you have a Master’s or higher degree.

Electricians and other utilities workers will always be in demand. Homes demand working electric lines to run their kitchen tools, computer, television, and other “toys.” So, if you’re a competent electrician, you’ll never be out of a job. The trick is landing the right electrician’s job. When formulating your resume, make sure to mention the following:

Your level of training. Electricians can learn a lot from experience. If you’ve been trained for a few years by a reputable electrician, then this will say a lot about you. People usually assume that if you learn from the best, you can become the best. Let employers know how much time you’ve dedicated to practicing the job.

Your education. Some electricians have advanced degrees, some have associates degrees, and some don’t have this type of education. If you’ve been certified or taught in an institution, be sure to mention it. If not, don’t draw attention to your lack of education. Experience speaks more than schooling, so be sure to play that up in that case.

Your previous work experience. Years on the job translate into competency. If you’ve worked for five years already, then odds are an employer will start out trusting you to do the job right, especially when compared to a complete novice. So list any experience you had before, and include lots of details about your responsibilities at previous jobs.

Web programming is a huge field with a ton of open positions for those savvy in code languages and website development. Workers in this field need to know a lot of programming languages, including HTML, XLM, PHP, Flash, and more. Plus, a familiarity with search engine marketing is becoming more and more necessary. Despite the amount of expertise needed to excel in this field, there is a lot of competition for positions. For this reason, it’s important to make sure you mention the right credentials on your resume. Make sure to include the following:

Your education. Knowledge of different computer systems and programming languages is key, and your education is a part of that. Whether you have an IT degree or a degree in Computer Engineering, list it on your resume. These credentials will hold weight.

Which languages you are fluent in. No, this doesn’t mean Spanish or French. You should indicate which programming languages you can use proficiently. This will let a potential employer know if your skills are compatible with the type of work they are doing.

Examples of websites or programs you’ve designed. If you have websites or programs readily available to show as examples of your work, it will impress employers. They can look up those websites and see that the code is solid, design is good, and that the information is interesting. This will help you land a great web programming job, even if the only thing you have to show is your personal website (make sure the content is professional!).

Advertisement comes in many shapes and forms now. Traditional advertisements are print ads in magazines or newspapers. There are also radio advertisements and television commercials. And with the growth of the Internet, there are ad banners, and social media websites such as Twitter. A job hunter searching for a position in advertising should be familiar with these different forms of media, and they should also possess some of the following skills:

Design capability and creativity. Advertisements are supposed to catch the eye, so you need a creative touch. You need to be able to think outside the box and come up with new designs that will catch a customer’s attention. This is how products and services are sold, so this skill cannot be ignored. Try to show evidence of your talents in this area on your resume by talking about your educational experiences, portfolio, and word experienct.

Knowledge of technology. Advertisers use a lot of technology these days to create ads. If you can do graphic design or web programming, this skill could really help you stand out from the crowd. With these skills, you can help create television, print, and online ads.

Experience with market research. Advertising is all about the market, so you need to know what tools to use and what approach to take when planning an ad campaign. If you can prove that you have experience researching consumer likes and dislikes and other relevant data, then you’ll show you are a great candidate for any advertising job.

Business is a wide field that encompasses many job types. If you work in business, you could be a consultant, business analyst, or office manager. You may or not have an MBA degree, or be working toward one. No matter your circumstances, though, every business applicant should have some respectable credentials. Try mentioning a few of these on your resume:

Your education. If you have a Bachelor’s in Business, or better yet, a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), then you should definitely include this on your resume. Savvy business professionals are well educated and have degrees appropriate to their field. Don’t leave out degrees you have that aren’t in business. If you hold an engineering, science, psychology, or any other type of degree, include it too, especially if it’s relevant to the business you are applying to.

Your work experience. In business, experience is just as important as education. Some skills you only learn once you’re on the job, like how to manage co-workers, how to work in teams, and how to run a payroll. If you’ve held any previous jobs that have given you skills that would be useful in the business world, be sure to list them.

Your people skills. In business, your ability to work with people is key. You may be managing an office, consulting with a company, or working in a team. Either way, you’ll have to interact with and work beside other people all the time. So, if you can prove you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, that will help you land the job.

Communication is a wide field that encompasses many different disciplines. A communications worker could work in journalism, television broadcasting, publishing, or marketing. Jobs positions in these industries require various talents, though they do have some skills in common. Make sure to communicate the following on your resume:

Writing or editing credentials. If you’re working in communications, odds are you’ll have to write a lot. This could mean writing scripts for radio commercials or articles for promotion. No matter what documents you need for your specific job, though, good writing and punctuation skills are important. You can show this by having a clean and proofread resume, and by mentioning work experience that shows these skills.

Previous experience. If you’ve worked in the industry before, it will help you beat out the competition. Of course, work experience doesn’t always mean you were paid for your job. If you were in a club that produced videos or volunteered at a non-profit organization, these are good things to list. All of these jobs use some communications skills, so this experience will serve as evidence of your competency.

Good communication skills. This may seem redundant to say, but if you’re going to be in a field that deals with communications, you need to be able to talk to people and get your ideas across clearly. One great way to prove this is by using strong vocabulary words in your resume so that you are concise and to the point. If you communicate well on paper, hiring directors will assume that you will do so in person, too, and they’ll be more likely to ask you in for an interview.

In the sales industry, there are tons of opportunities for work. You may find a job in retail selling clothes or other items in a mall. You may find yourself working as an account executive, handling funds for a company. Or you may find yourself working as a product manager, overseeing the production and movement of items to stores. These are just a few options. When writing your resume for a career in sales, take into account exactly what you’ll be doing. Don’t tailor your resume toward a retail position if you want to be in management. The following tips will help you construct the best resume for you:

Mention previous experience in the field. Even if it was just a temporary job while you were a student, any experience in retail is good experience for this field. Talk about your responsibilities, such as handling the register, interacting with customers, and promoting products. If you can show that you know how to close a deal, then you’ll be a great asset to any company you apply to.

Talk about awards or past achievements. In sales, there’s always a top salesman. If you’ve ever received a company award along those lines, it’s definitely something to include on the resume. And don’t forget to mention why you earned it! Also, any outstanding achievements, like bringing in the most new customers or increasing income, are great things to mention. Think about what you’ve done in the past. Even little achievements can mean something.

Include figures, where possible. When it comes to sales, numbers are important. If you know how much revenue you brought in during one quarter at a previous job, and that number was large, then it’s something to mention. It can help impress a future employer. Also, if you know the percentage you increased sales or something along those lines, write those figures on your resume.
