An objective statement should communicate some, if not all, of the following things:
- The job you are applying for
- Your best skills, as they apply to that job
- Your career objectives
- The degree or experience you have
The following are examples from five different industries:
Early Childhood Job:
Experienced elementary teacher with a Master’s degree seeking a job at XYZ School District in order to further the education of first grade students.
Why is this example good? It highlights the potential employee’s most appropriate skills – the Master’s in Education and previous experience in the field – while remaining specific to the job. It also lists the name of the company, which demonstrates that the applicant has taken the time to tailor the resume to the job. It also lists career objectives: furthering the education of first grade students.
Pharmacy Technican Job:
Certified Pharmacy Technician with two years’ experience seeking position at XYZ Pharmacy to help with patient care and customer service.
Why is this example good? It outlines two very important career objectives: the patient care and customer service. A pharmacy technician helps the pharmacist interact with patients and maximize their care, so having these career goals is important to the industry. It also highlights the experience of the applicant and shows that they will be a good choice for the employer.
Engineering Job:
To utilize my two years’ research experience and my Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering while working with XYZ Motor Company to increase production of hybrid vehicles.
Why is this example good? It highlights the research experience and Master’s Degree, which would be necessary in the development of new hybrid vehicles. The career goals are specific to the job at hand. Plus, it addresses the needs of the company (increasing production) while showing how the applicant can help.
Office Managing Job:
To obtain a managerial position at XYZ Company where my communication skills, organization, and dedication will help to streamline office productivity.
Why is this example good? Though it doesn’t highlight education or experience, it does name three skills that are specific to the job at hand. It also explains how those skills will be beneficial to the company, thus showing that the candidate should be invited for an interview.
Restaurant Job:
To secure a position with XYZ Eatery in order to utilize my management experience and customer service skills to improve customer satisfaction.
Why is this example good? It highlights two relevant skills and a career objective that all restaurants will love.
