Communication is a wide field that encompasses many different disciplines. A communications worker could work in journalism, television broadcasting, publishing, or marketing. Jobs positions in these industries require various talents, though they do have some skills in common. Make sure to communicate the following on your resume:
Writing or editing credentials. If you’re working in communications, odds are you’ll have to write a lot. This could mean writing scripts for radio commercials or articles for promotion. No matter what documents you need for your specific job, though, good writing and punctuation skills are important. You can show this by having a clean and proofread resume, and by mentioning work experience that shows these skills.
Previous experience. If you’ve worked in the industry before, it will help you beat out the competition. Of course, work experience doesn’t always mean you were paid for your job. If you were in a club that produced videos or volunteered at a non-profit organization, these are good things to list. All of these jobs use some communications skills, so this experience will serve as evidence of your competency.
Good communication skills. This may seem redundant to say, but if you’re going to be in a field that deals with communications, you need to be able to talk to people and get your ideas across clearly. One great way to prove this is by using strong vocabulary words in your resume so that you are concise and to the point. If you communicate well on paper, hiring directors will assume that you will do so in person, too, and they’ll be more likely to ask you in for an interview.
